Spectral characteristics for graphene quantum dots (GQDs) of shungite, attributed to individual fragments of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), reveal a dual character of the dispersions emitting centers: individual GQDs are responsible for the spectra position while fractal structure of GQD colloids provides large broadening of the spectra due to structural inhomogeneity of the colloidal dispersions and a peculiar dependence of photoluminescence of dispersions on excitation wavelength. For the first time, photoluminescence spectra of individual GQDs were observed in frozen toluene dispersions, which pave the way for a theoretical treatment of GQDs photonics.</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>graphene quantum dots</kwd><kwd>fractals</kwd><kwd>photoluminescence</kwd><kwd>colloidal dispersions</kwd><kwd>shungite</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><funding-statement xml:lang="en">A financial support provided by the Ministry of Science and High Education of the Russian Federation grant 2.8223.2013, Basic Research Program, RAS, Earth Sciences Section5, and grant RFBI 13-03-00422 is highly acknowledged.</funding-statement></funding-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Rozhkova N.N., Sheka E.F.
